Agriculture Featured

Agriculture is the backbone of Kitui County. In the highlands of Kitui, farmers are involved in subsistence agriculture - mainly growing cotton, tobacco, sisal, mangoes, maize, beans, cassava, sorghum, millet and pigeon peas. These crops are well adapted to the climatic conditions of Kitui.

Kitui being a semi-arid area receives between 500mm and 1050mm of rain fall annually, with average rainfall of 900mm a year. It has two rainy seasons; March-May (Long Rains) and November-December (Short Rains).

The county is mostly dry and hot with temperatures ranging between 14°C during the coldest months (July-August) and 34°C during the hottest months (January-March). This makes it suitable for solar powered irrigation farming in the county. Recently, a 500 Acre Irrigation Project was set up in the county with its source of water being River Tana which runs along the county bounder.

In the lowlands, farmers keep livestock - mainly cattle, sheep, goats and chicken - as a means to supplement crop farming as their source of income.

While the county continues to face enormous challenges in reducing poverty, a vision of economic renaissance by smallholder farmers is beginning to take hold. There is growing belief that Kitui can produce enough not only to feed its own people but to export a growing surplus. Kitui County can make a real contribution to ensuring food security for the people while also growing its economy and pulling its people out of poverty. As a result, smallholder farmers have become more productive and more prosperous.

There are many opportunities for agriculture development in Kitui today. The county has a large share of the Kenya’s uncultivated land, with irrigation-fed crop potential. In other words, there room for agriculture to expand in a sustainable way to meet the growing demand.
