Senator Hon. David Musila

Hon. Sen. David Musila was elected the first Senator of Kitui County in the first bicameral government since promulgation of the new constitution, 2010. Born on February 24, 1943, Hon. David Musila is a career public administrator having served for over 30 years.

Long before joining politics, Hon. Musila grew up in Mwingi, Kitui County. His father, Nathan Musila was a well-respected man in the society having worked closely with the then Chief, Kasina and his mother Alice Kivwea. Hon. Musila credits his parents with instilling in him toughness, hard work and perseverance. Growing up in a society that knew less about education Hon. Musila was lucky to have attended primary school and having passed the Common Entrance Examination he joined secondary education. He subsequently obtained a B.A. honors degree in Economics and Government at Bishop College, Texas in 1968, where he received recognition as an outstanding Economic undergraduate by the Dallas Economists Club.

After graduating from Bishop College in 1968, Hon. Musila was appointed as a District Officer (D.O.) and was posted to Naivasha and later to Molo. Being determined to serve, Hon. Musila rose to District Commissioner (D.C.) in 1974 before becoming a deputy Provincial commissioner (D.P.C.) in 1978 where he served for one year. He was then promoted to become a provincial commissioner in 1979 and was posted to the then Central Province. Having served as an administrator and being rich in experience he was appointed the Director of Tourism in the Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife, Kenya. He served in this capacity for 3 years and retired from civil service in 1988. Later, in 1993 Hon. Musila became the consultant on Tourism for the World Tourism Organization until 2010.

In 1997, Hon. Musila went into politics and successfully vied for the Mwingi South Constituency Parliamentary seat with KANU ticket and he was sworn in as a Member of Parliament in 1998. He then went on to be re-elected in the 2002 with NARC ticket and ODM-K ticket in 2007 elections. His re-election was attributed to the work he did to the constituents for the 3 terms he served even bearing the name “Meko” which means deeds/actions. In his era as a Member of Parliament, he served as a Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly from 2002 to 2007 and also an Assistant Minister of Defense from 2008 to 2013.

In the first ‘6 ballot elections’ held in 2013, Hon. Musila vied for a Senator’s position and worn the hotly contested seat becoming the first Senator of Kitui County since promulgation on new constitution, 2010 having garnered 156,690 votes out of 272,243 votes cast followed by Hon. Charity Ngilu with111,447 and two others. Apart from being a Senator, Hon. Musila is the Chairman of Wiper Democratic Movement-Kenya (WDM-K) and a member of Parliamentary Service Commission. He is the Chairman of Security & Development Committee of the Commission, a member of Audit Committee of the Commission, Staff Welfare Committee of the Commission, and the Senate Committee on Energy, Roads and Transportation.

Hon. Musila has been married to his wife, Beatrice Musila, since 1970. Together they have four children who they have raised to grownups. Apart from him being a dedicated husband, a father, Hon. Musila is also a grandfather of three.


Kitui Senator is a member of Parliamentary Service Commission (PSC) which is an Independent government Commission establishedunder the constitution of Kenya (Amendment) Act on November 11, 1999 and was accented by the president on November 17, 1999 and came into effect on November 19, 1999. PSC ensures smooth functioning of the parliament.

Kitui Senator is also a member of Audit Committee of the Commission, Security & Development Committee of the Commission, Staff Welfare Committee of the Commission, and Senate Committee on Energy, Roads and Transportation.
